Biodiesel is bio-degradable, eco-friendly and a non-poisonous fuel. Biodiesel is made through a chemical process called transesterification whereby the glycerin is separated from the fat or vegetable oil.
It is relatively easy to produce in small or large volumes. Used vegetable oils along with sewage are all being used to produce biodiesel these days. Producing biodiesel from animal fats may not be feasible enough to replace petrodiesel just yet because of its limited supply.
Most of the diesel engines do not require any modification in order to use bio-diesel instead of petrodiesel. It is made from sustainable, locally grown crops, reducing the need to buy foreign oil. In cold place weather, water freezes to form ice crystals which accelerate the gelling of the residual fuel.
We need to determine what the true balance is between good and bad from an environmental perspective. Most governments have been proceeding with caution and rightly so but mixed messages from governments around the world have only added to the uncertainty around the use biodiesel fuel.
